Conclusion

Iron Jawed Angels was an impactful and influential movie.  The movie had scenes which elicited emotions from those who watched.  This scenes were framed this way to have an impact on our, the publics, perceptions of the women's rights movement.  Though one may have known details of the women's rights movement, seeing the events portrayed through the lens of a movie could have engraved those ideas a certain way into our memories.  As humans, we tend to believe things one sees as fact vs. believing without seeing.  Films can portray historical events inaccurately, and one would then believe those events to be accurate.  Without fact checking and no understanding of "framing", "agenda setting", etc. one would watch Iron Jawed Angels and believe that the prison scene and the subsequent force feeding directly led to the passage of the 19th Amendment.  Though the impact of those who sacrificed should not be understated, the film portrays the events as simple direct correlation.  When in reality the 19th Amendment was passed three years after the prison incident.  This can be a significant misunderstanding, especially for those who may watch the film without prior knowledge of the women's suffrage fight.  The film portrays the influential women rights leaders accurately and furthermore frames the parade and picketing of the White House accurately.  Directors have an artistic freedom to alter situations in their films as they see fit.  This can have a negative impact on society because one will watch these films and see the events portrayed in the films as fact.  Directors for the betterment of our society should strictly adhere to Responsible Film Making, and keep their films as historically accurately as possible.  Though this would be difficult because of the profit seeking nature of the Hollywood industry, the betterment of society should be placed above profits when it comes to films in which historical events are being portrayed.  We as a group will take the lessons of truth and truthiness from this film and other media topics learned this semester and apply them into our personal lives when viewing media in the future.
